What is Highland Park?

Sweet smoke from the Orkney Islands

Highland Park is a single malt whisky from Kirkwall, the capital of Orkney. This island group lies north of mainland Scotland and has a strong Norse history; that is why the brand displays its Viking heritage so prominently on its bottles. The distillery has existed since 1798 and is one of the northernmost in Scotland. The brand belongs to Edrington, the company that also makes The Macallan.

What makes Highland Park special is the peat. Almost no trees grow on Orkney; the peat consists mainly of heather. Highland Park still malts some of its own barley and dries it over this heather peat. This gives it a gentle, aromatic smoke with a sweet, honeyed side, very different from Islay's salty, medicinal smoke. In addition, the whisky is largely matured in casks that previously held sherry. The result is a whisky that sits between gentle and smoky.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Highland Park

Highland Park is a versatile whisky: gentle enough for those just starting out, with enough smoke and sherry for enthusiasts.

Neat, with a drop of water

Pour 30 ml into a tulip-shaped tasting glass and let it sit for a moment. A few drops of water open up the honey and fruit. With the Cask Strength, water is almost essential: start with a teaspoon and taste again.

On the rocks

One large ice cube in a tumbler keeps the whisky cool without diluting it quickly. The 12 Years and Viking Scars are especially delicious this way as an aperitif.

In a cocktail

The gentle smoke and sherry notes work well in classic whisky cocktails. Choose the 12 Years or Dragon Legend for an Old Fashioned or a Rob Roy.

To Scotch whisky →
What percentage of alcohol is in Highland Park?
The 12 Years and the Viking Scars 10 Years are 40% ABV. Dragon Legend is 43.1%, the 18 Years 43% and the 15 Years 44%. The 21 Years is 46%. Cask Strength Release 4 is bottled at cask strength: 64.3%.
Where does Highland Park come from?
From Kirkwall, the capital of Orkney, an island group north of the Scottish mainland. The distillery has existed since 1798. Despite its name, it is therefore not a Highland whisky in the usual sense, but an island whisky.
Is Highland Park smoky?
A little. Highland Park dries some of its barley over Orkney heather peat. This gives it a soft, aromatic and sweet smoke. It is much less smoky than Islay whisky such as Laphroaig or Ardbeg.
What is the difference between the 12 and 18 Years?
The 12 Years is fresh and approachable, with orange, heather honey and a hint of smoke. The 18 Years has spent longer in sherry casks and is rounder and more complex, with cherries, chocolate and honeycomb. The smoke is even softer in the 18.
Which Highland Park is good as a gift?
The 18 Years Viking Pride is a safe choice for a whisky lover. If you want something smaller, the Viking Scars 10 Years in a 35 cl bottle is a great introduction. For someone who likes powerful whisky, the Cask Strength is a good choice.
Which glass do you use for Highland Park?
A tulip-shaped tasting glass for tasting neat; it concentrates the aroma. For on the rocks or an Old Fashioned, use a tumbler with a heavy base.
