What is Hoppe?

An Amsterdam classic

Hoppe is one of the old Amsterdam names in the jenever world. The distillery was taken over by Bols long ago, and the brand is still part of Lucas Bols. Hoppe makes two things: vieux and jonge jenever.

Vieux is a typically Dutch drink. It is alcohol with caramel and flavorings, giving it a color and flavor reminiscent of cognac or brandy. In the past, this type of drink was sold as Dutch cognac, but that name is no longer permitted: cognac comes only from the French region around Cognac. Hoppe Vieux is traditionally prepared, with notes of caramel and anise. Hoppe Jonge Jenever is clear, light and grainy, a true Dutch digestif.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Hoppe

In the Netherlands, vieux and jenever are mainly enjoyed as drinks. But they also mix well.

Neat as a drink

Pour the vieux at room temperature into a shot glass. Young jenever is best served well chilled, in a stemmed glass filled to the brim.

Vieux with cola

Ice in a highball glass, 4 cl Hoppe Vieux, and top up with cola. Add a lemon wedge. A classic in the brown café.

About cola →

As a kopstoot

A full shot glass next to a glass of lager. This can be young jenever, but vieux works too. The shot first, then the beer right after.
