What are ready-to-drink cocktails?

A cocktail without a shaker

A ready-to-drink cocktail is a drink that the maker has already mixed for you. You don't need to measure or shake anything: open the can or bottle and pour. In stores, it's also called premix, ready-to-drink (RTD), or a mixed drink. People often search for "cocktails in cans," and that is also the largest category.

There is a lot of variation in strength. Canned long drinks, such as gin and tonic or whisky and cola, usually contain between 4 and 6.5% alcohol, about the same as beer. Cocktails in a bottle, such as a mojito or rum punch to pour out, are often around 10 to 12.5%. A few brands go even higher: BuzzBallz has 13.5% and Lavish Extreme 21%. So always check the label. At the same time, the alcohol-free category is growing: mocktails, alcohol-free seltzers and elixirs.

What do they taste like?

Usually sweeter than homemade

Highballs

Familiar & refreshing

A canned gin and tonic or whiskey and cola tastes as you know it, just slightly sweeter and with less ice-cold freshness.

Cocktails

Fruity & full

Canned or bottled mojitos, punches and martinis are often sweeter than at the bar. Fresh fruit and plenty of ice make them more refreshing.

Seltzers

Light & dry

Hard seltzer is the opposite: low in sweetness, highly carbonated and with a hint of fruit.

Sweet 4/5
Fruity 4/5
Sparkling 3/5
Strength 2/5

Average flavor profile of a canned cocktail at around 5%. Hard seltzer scores lower on sweetness; bottled cocktails and BuzzBallz higher on strength.

How to serve it

Three ways to make premix better

Ready-to-drink doesn't mean it has to come from the can. With ice, a good glass and a garnish, you can get more out of it.

Plenty of ice and a fresh wedge

Chill the can well, fill a glass completely with ice and pour it over. A lime wedge, an orange slice or a sprig of mint instantly makes it more refreshing.

Martinis in a coupe

Pour an Espresso Martini or Passion Fruit Martini from a can ice-cold into a chilled coupe, without ice. Shaking it in a shaker with ice briefly creates a beautiful layer of foam.

What are ready-to-drink cocktails?
Cocktails and long drinks that the maker has already mixed, in a can or bottle. You don't need to measure or shake anything: open, pour and enjoy. They are also called premix, ready-to-drink or mixed drinks.
How much alcohol is in ready-to-drink cocktails?
It varies widely. Canned long drinks and hard seltzer usually contain between 4 and 6.5%. Bottled cocktails are around 10 to 12.5%, BuzzBallz is 13.5% and Lavish Extreme is 21%. Alcohol-free versions are also available.
What is a premix?
Another term for a ready-to-drink beverage: spirits already mixed with soda, juice or other ingredients. Think of Breezer, Smirnoff Ice or a canned gin and tonic.
Which canned cocktails are available?
These include gin and tonic (Gordon's, Bombay Sapphire), whisky and rum and cola (Jack Daniel's, Captain Morgan), martinis (Absolut Espresso Martini, Passoa Passion Fruit Martini), hard seltzer (Stëlz, Breezer) and mocktails (Dutch Cocktail Club).
Are there ready-to-drink cocktails without alcohol?
Yes. For example, the mocktails from Dutch Cocktail Club, De Kuyper Zero Mojito, the 0.0 cans from Stëlz, and alcohol-free drinks such as Gimber and Sapinca.
Which glass do you use for ready-to-drink cocktails?
The same as with a real cocktail: a coupe for martinis, a large copa glass for gin and tonic and spritz, and a highball glass with ice for cola mixes and seltzers.
