Hip flasks

Nearly all good hip flasks are made of stainless steel. This material is flavor-neutral, practically unbreakable, and does not react with alcohol, so whisky, cognac, or genever tastes exactly as intended. A thick steel wall also prevents the flask from deforming when it is in an inside pocket. Look for a screw cap attached to the neck with a hinge: you can open it with one hand and never lose it.

The most commonly used capacity is 200 ml, about four hearty sips. This size is slim enough to slip into an inside pocket or jacket pocket without showing. If you mainly want to carry it with you during a long day outdoors, look for a version with a curved back that follows the shape of your hip. A leather covering feels warmer in the hand and protects the flask from scratches.

Use a small funnel to fill it without spilling, and always leave a centimeter of air at the top. Clean a hip flask by hand: use warm water with a small amount of mild dish soap, rinse thoroughly, and leave it upside down to drain. Do not leave a drink in the flask for months, as this can cause a musty smell. Never put leather versions in the dishwasher, as this can irreparably damage the covering.
